The Low-Down:
Dockwise Yacht Transport, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, specializes in the maritime transport of private luxury yachts to various destinations throughout the world. Since its maiden voyage in 1987, the company has transported nearly 10,000 yachts safely and securely.
Three years ago, the company added the world’s first specifically built yacht motor vessel-the Yacht Express-to its fleet of semi-submersible ships.
Just shy of two football fields in length, the Yacht Express is the largest vessel in her class and with a service speed of 18 knots, provides the fastest transit available from the U.S. East Coast to the Mediterranean.
With all the amenities, and certainly the lifestyle, associated with today’s luxury yachts, one can’t help but wonder why yacht owners would opt to use a transport service rather than just sailing themselves.
“Some yachts simply do not have the range to reach some of the world’s most favorable cruising destinations,” explains Catalina Bujor, Public Relations and Marketing Officer. “Those that have the range want to avoid the wear and tear on yacht and crew, save on engine hours and maintenance, paint systems and fuel costs, and in turn preserve the resale value of the yacht. Transporting a yacht also gives the crew a break for holidays or between back-to-back charters.”
There’s also a timeliness factor. During the popular Mediterranean season (typically April to the end of October), it could take a yacht owner 3 weeks, or between 6-8 weeks in bad weather, to sail from the U.S. East Coast to the Mediterranean. However, Dockwise Yacht Transport is able to transport the vessel in two weeks. wt
