Maersk Places Order for Megaships

Maersk has placed an order for 10 megaships at a total cost of roughly $1.9 billion. South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding will build the Triple-E class vessels, which will be able to carry 18,000 TEUs.

Delivery of the first 10 megaships will take place between 2013 and 2015.

At a cost of $190 million per vessel, Maersk could spend up to $5.7 billion if they use their full option to buy another 20 vessels. And, if they exercise their option, it would represent the single largest order in shipbuilding history.

Major shipping lines are moving to replace smaller container vessels with larger ones in an effort to increase overall profits. The fuel consumption alone for the larger, more efficient vessels will decrease by 35 percent. Furthermore, the Triple-E megaships will use 20 percent less carbon dioxide than Maersk’s largest vessel currently in service, the Emma Maersk.
