CSX Leads Railroads in Newsweek Green Rankings

CSX Corporation, a transportation supplier based in Jacksonville, Fla., has announced that it ranked first among Class I freight railroads in the recently released Newsweek Green Rankings. CSX has consistently placed first among all Class I railroads in these rankings since the awards were launched in 2009.

CSX ranks 263 among the top 500 publicly-traded companies in the U.S., and ninth in the transportation and logistics category. Additionally, CSX ranks 379 on the global rankings list, ahead of all other Class I railroads.

Newsweek's Green Rankings are based on four criteria: green score, environmental impact, environmental management, and disclosure. Disclosure is a new category added this year to measure company transparency and reporting measures. The research is a combined effort between Newsweek and environmental analysts Trucost and Sustainalytics, incorporating company-submitted materials. The methodology and results are peer-reviewed by an advisory panel.

This ranking highlights CSX's continued commitment to environmentally-safe practices. CSX recently partnered with a graduate student in the Environmental Defense Fund's Climate Corps program to research sustainable practices for CSX. Additionally, CSX continues to pilot new technology to reduce emissions and implement sustainable practices. Earlier this year, CSX was added to the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, which looks at economic performance, environmental sustainability, and social responsibility. CSX led the industrial transportation sector in this measurement.
