The contract logistics industry in China has been expanding steadily to support ongoing trade in the country, both in exports and increasingly for imports targeting a growing consumer base.
Dachser moved from its existing Shanghai regional warehouse, in operation since 2007, to the new location to increase capacity. The new facility is located close to the center of Shanghai, directly on the G2 Beijing-Shanghai expressway and the G1501 Shanghai ring road, providing close access to the Greater Shanghai administrative area and its 23 million inhabitants. Suzhou and Wuxi, both cities of more than 1 million inhabitants, are within a two-hour drive. The new warehouse provides space for up to 16,000 pallets in an area of 108,000 square feet.
"China is and will continue to be a key bridgehead for the expansion of our intercontinental network," says Thomas Reuter, managing director of Dachser Air & Sea Logistics.
Dachser will use its proprietary warehouse management system, Mikado, to operate the facility. The Mikado operational and administrative warehouse management system (WMS) has been used by Dachser in Europe for many years and for the past five years in China. The new Shanghai warehouse is equipped with modern shelving systems that fully comply with all fire prevention requirements. Access controls, video surveillance and a 24/7 guard service ensure the highest security on the five-acre Dachser site. Covered and adjustable loading ramps allow for safe and easy handling of goods.
Dachser has been active in China for over 30 years and currently employs a staff of 650 people at 15 locations in Greater China.
