APL Logistics Acquires Carmichael International

The U.S. customs brokerage will augment APL’s 3PL offerings.

In announcing the acquisition of Carmichael International Service, Jim McAdam, president of APL Logistics, said, “This acquisition is vitally important to APL Logistics’ strategy to strengthen the integration of our international supply chain services.”

APL Logistics is the supply chain management unit of Singapore’s NOL Group. Los Angeles-based Carmichael is one of the largest independent customs brokerage, trade compliance and consulting specialists in the U.S. Founded in 1961, the firm employs approximately 200 professionals in 10 key U.S. metropolitan markets.

The two companies have enjoyed a close working relationship for nearly two decades, the companies said. This transaction allows APL Logistics to bring the customs brokerage and trade compliance service capability in-house.

“Today, APL Logistics has the processes and systems in place to help customers comply with U.S. Customs and Border Protection's programs at origins,” said Tony Zasimovich, APL Logistics’ vice president of International Logistics Services. “Add to that Carmichael’s Customs brokerage and trade consulting capabilities in the U.S., and we will be well positioned to coordinate the flow of goods and information from the factory floor at an international origin to the store-door in the U.S.”

Supply chain visibility is an appealing yet elusive capability for most companies. While most recognize the significant benefits that would accrue from comprehensive visibility, few have made it a reality across their global operations. Part of the problem companies seem to have in embracing and implementing visibility is the lack of a comprehensive definition or firm understanding of the transformational potential. In this podcast, World Trade and GT Nexus will discuss the definitions and opportunities as well as how new cloud technology platforms are driving significant value to major companies today.

Speaker: Greg Johnson, Chief Marketing Officer & Co-Founder of GT Nexus
