NYK Resumes Direct Shipments to Earthquake Area

NYK resumes coal deliveries 1 year 8 months after tsunami.

November 28, 2012

On November 19, a 90,000 DWT NYK-operated bulk carrier Haramachimaru arrived with a full load of coal at a dedicated port for a thermal power station operated by Tohoku Electric Power Co. Inc. (headquarters: Sendai, Miyagi prefecture). This was the first arrival of a coal carrier at the berth since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

The berth is located in the town of Haramachi, and wharf operations restarted as the power station became operational again. A total of 89,000 tons of coal from Newcastle, Australia, was unloaded from the vessel, Haramachimaru. The area’s recovery efforts are expected to greatly benefit from the resumption of the power station and these coal shipments.

NYK will continue its efforts to aid reconstruction of the affected area and help maintain a stable supply of energy resources.

Assurance of Supply: A Top Concern for Manufacturers

Every manufacturer has an assurance of supply problem to some extent due to the complexity of global sourcing. For years, manufacturers were blessed with high margins but margins have grown paper thin. You can’t fill up your distribution centers with excess inventory – not only is there a cost factor but the pace of business and consumer buying trends causes goods to quickly turn obsolete. Assurance of supply provides the speed and agility that is essential to being able to compete in today’s market.
