RWI Transportation, an asset-based logistics company providing regional and national truckload, expedited and refrigerated warehousing services, has announced the successful results of its recent driver retention strategies designed to minimize driver turnover rates.
The company manages more than 100,000 shipments each year of all types of freight through the use of 100 percent owner/operators.
RWI has been working aggressively in the last 18 months to address the counterproductive turnover issue facing the overall industry. Through its driver retention strategies, they have been able to successfully maintain an 83 percent turnover rate during the second quarter of 2013.
This rate is significantly lower than the industry average of 99 percent turnover for large truckload fleets (company drivers and owner operators), according to the most recent American Trucking Associations’ Trucking Activity Report. Other reports place the turnover rate for 100-percent owner operator carriers at nearly 115 percent.
“Since we began our driver retention efforts, we’ve been encouraged by the amount of positive feedback we’ve received from our owner operators,” says Tom Curee, driver retention specialist at RWI Transportation. “They’ve helped to identify challenges they’re facing and have provided solutions that have enabled us to provide a better experience for our owner operators.”
Curee continues, “We’re excited about the progress we’ve made, but we know we’ve got a lot more work to do. One saying you’ll hear around our office is ‘Do it right the first time.’ We believe we need to take the same approach as we continue to focus on our retention efforts.”
