Global Terminal Expansion On Target

This is the Port of New York/New Jersey’s first semi-automated terminal.

The United States’ newest semi-automated facility, Global Terminal, announced that the latest of ten stacks of additional capacity has been completed on time. Global took delivery of the last 5 of its 20 Rail Mounted Gantry (RMG) cranes on Thursday, April 10. The ten stack expansion will more than double the capacity of the terminal to 1.1 million lifts annually, and is slated to be fully operational by the end of this summer.

After more than four years of planning and construction, the expanded Global Terminal is now open. Importers and exporters to the New York/New Jersey harbour now have the best Big Ship Ready alternative to service cargo to the region faster, and more efficiently.

Activity has been non-stop. Last May saw the completion of its 274-meter (900-foot) berth extension allowing Global to handle the latest Suez Max vessels. Later in July 2013, the streamlined truck gate complex equipped with optical character recognition and radio frequency identification tags was successfully launched with the impressive ability to handle more than 5,000 transactions per day. Last month, Global became the first terminal in North America to launch Navis N4 version 2.5 without disruption to its customers and stakeholders. The facility has been commissioning new equipment on an ongoing basis, which now includes a fleet of 17 shuttle trucks from Terex and 20 semi-automatic RMGs from Konecranes.

Global Terminal’s new semi-automated terminal will boast the harbour’s fastest processing and turnaround times. Rich Ceci, project manager and vice president of IT at Global Container Terminals USA commented, “The expansion team has been committed to ensure the facility serves our customers’ next generation of vessels quickly and reliably.”

“It is gratifying to see the achievement of the company’s vision to develop a safer facility that meets the evolving needs of the industry while providing better working conditions for the workforce,” said Jim Devine, president and CEO of Global Container Terminals USA. “We couldn’t have met our target without the skill and dedication of our project team and the support of the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey.”

In June 2014, the expanded Global Terminal will handle its first commercial lift. By this time, Global will feature the best vessel productivity in the New York harbour.

Assurance of Supply: A Top Concern for Manufacturers

Every manufacturer has an assurance of supply problem to some extent due to the complexity of global sourcing. For years, manufacturers were blessed with high margins but margins have grown paper thin. You can’t fill up your distribution centers with excess inventory – not only is there a cost factor but the pace of business and consumer buying trends causes goods to quickly turn obsolete. Assurance of supply provides the speed and agility that is essential to being able to compete in today’s market.
