Similar to the U.S. 'Hours-of-Service' rule that limits the time truck drivers can spend behind the wheel each day, Canada has proposed changes to its truck driver rules.
Specifically, the new rules call for limiting commercial to 13 hours of driving within 14 hours on duty per 24-hour period.
Under the new rules, drivers will have to take off 10 hours over a total 24, up from eight hours. On-duty time is reduced from 16 to 14 hours. Maximum daily driving time is reduced from 16 to 13 hours.
Implementation of the new rules is expected by the end of 2005.
