DHL Joins EPA's SmartWay Program

DHL has joned the SmartWay Transport Partnership, a collaboration between the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the freight industry, designed to significantly reduce greenhouse gases and air pollution.

With SmartWay, DHL Global Forwarding will now be able to calculate all of its subcontracted miles and performance efficiency, allowing the company to measure the carbon foot-print associated with its ground freight activity.

DHL Global Forwarding is Deutsche Post DHL's third business division to join SmartWay, after Global Mail and Express.

By improving the environmental performance of its freight operations, DHL Global Forwarding will contribute to SmartWay's goal to reduce between 33 and 66 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and up to 200,000 tons of nitrogen oxide per year by 2012.

Joining SmartWay is an integral part of DHL's continued development of its GoGreen climate protection program, through which the company aims to improve its CO2 efficiency across all of its operations, including subcontracted transportation services, by 30% by 2020.
