Three companies have been awarded contracts worth about $1.35 billion with the Department of Homeland Security to develop an imaging system that can detect high-density material in a container that is concealing a nuclear or radiological weapon.
The imaging system known as CAARS-the Cargo Advanced Automated Radiography System-will also be able to detect contraband explosives and drugs.
Approximately 300 CAARS systems will be deployed in the U.S. and abroad over the next six years by the DHS' Domestic Nuclear Detection Office.
