The Dominican Republic's President Leonel Fernandez is being urged to reject a provision in the budget recently passed by country's lawmakers that places a 25 percent tax on soft drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup, which was advanced as a way to increase needed revenue and protect the Dominican Republic's sugar industry.
High fructose corn syrup is used as a sweetener in soft drinks and some candy and is a key agricultural export of the United States.
Both the U.S. Trade Representative and members of the U.S. Congress have warned the Caribbean country that if the new tax remains in place, the Dominican Republic's inclusion in the Central American Free Trade Agreement could be threatened.
