The European Commission has delayed a decision on whether Romania and Bulgaria can join the EU next January, as originally hoped, because of concerns over corruption and organized crime.

It's possible that the commission could delay accession for both countries for one year-anything longer would be highly unlikely.

Slovenia, meanwhile, has been given the green light to join the EU, although the commission rejected Lithuania's bid due to the country's high inflation rate.
