Fewer Turks express desire to enter bloc
A recent survey published in the Turkish Milliyet newspaper reveals fewer Turks think their country should join the European Union.Only 32.2 percent of citizens polled believe Turkey “must certainly enter the EU,” as compared to 57.4 percent last year and 67.5 percent in 2004.
Observers say the latest results are a reflection of the ongoing dispute between Turkey and the EU over Turkey’s relations with Cyprus.
For instance, Europe wants Turkey to open up access to seaports and airports to Cypriot carriers by the end of this year, although Turkey wants certain free trade concessions from Cyprus first.
