Missile Hits Cargo Plane Over Iraq

A cargo plane operated by DHL was hit by a shoulder-fired missile as it flew over Iraq in late November, prompting the company to temporarily suspend flights in that country. The attack caused one of the aircraft's engines to catch fire and forced an emergency landing at Baghdad International Airport. Although there have been previous reports of ground-to-air missiles being fired at civilian aircraft in Iraq, this is the first time a plane has been forced down. The U.S. government has depended upon DHL's fleet of aircraft to deliver equipment, mail, and other supplies to Iraq. Each day, the company carriers up to 50 tons of mail for military personnel. There are roughly 110 flights into the Iraqi capital daily, with about two-thirds of them official or military business and the remainder civilian or cargo flights.
