New sites chosen to accommodate trade growth
India's two largest ports-Mumbai and Nhava Sheva-are operating at peak capacity, which has prompted the government to build secondary ports to help alleviate congestion and facilitate increasing trade flows.Sutrapada, a coastal belt within the Saurashtra region, has been identified as a potential site for a multipurpose port. The location is a top pick due to its deep waterways and proximity to existing rail links.
New ports are also being planned for Positra, Dholera, Maroli, Simar, Vansi Borsi, Mithirvirdi, and New Bedi. While some of them will specialize in certain commodities, many will have container terminals for general cargo.
