Look to Panama as becoming an important portage route for good traveling between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans this year. Manzanillo, a privately operated port that opened in 1995, has already become the leading container-handling port in Latin America. In 2000, the port, on the Atlantic side, handled more than 1 million TEUs, surpassing previously top-ranked Buenos Aires. Brazil's Santos port was Latin America's third-busiest port in 2000, handling 987,708 TEUs. Furthermore, the east-west Panama railway is scheduled for re-opening in June, which will give shippers and carriers an additional means to get goods from one side of the isthmus to the other.
