A trade and investment agreement between the U.S. and the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), signed in August, could pave the way to a free trade pact between the two parties.
“The ASEAN region is a very high priority for not just U.S. commercial and economic ties but for the overall geopolitical interests and commitments of the U.S.,” remarked U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab.
Trade between the two parties grew 12.4 percent in 2005 to $153 billion.
Under the current trade and investment agreement, officials from the U.S. and ASEAN will establish a ministerial dialogue to explore ways to nurture and expand trade and investment relations.
