President Bush remarked that he was “concerned” about the message sent to allies. The two trade partners “need additional time to prepare”' for a fifth round of negotiations that had been scheduled for March, explained a spokesman for the U.S. Trade Representative's office.
In a recent speech, President Bush linked the collapsed port deal to the war on terror. “In order to win the war on terror, we have got to strengthen our friendship with moderate Arab nations,” he said.
The free trade negotiations had been moving forward without controversy since they began in November 2004.
