WEF Survey Puts U.S. In Top Spot

The latest global competitiveness report by the Geneva-based World Economic Forum puts the U.S. back in the top spot, followed in second place by Finland. The order is a reverse from last year when Finland took the top honor. "This is quite striking," remarked Peter Cornelius, project director. The results are even more impressive for Finland, considering that the country's economy ten years ago was largely dependent on the collapsing ex-Soviet Union. The WEF's annual survey examines such indicators as technology conditions, public institutions, and the macroeconomic environment to determine each country's prospects for economic growth. Some of the most disappointing results came in from Turkey, which fell from 54th place last year to 69th place this year, and Argentina, which settled in the 63rd spot from last year's 49th position. The countries' financial crises were to blame for the decline. Haiti was the least competitive country on the list.
