More fireworks go off on the Fourth of July than for any other national celebration in the world. With the celebration of America's national independence just around the corner, both Ryder and our customers in the fireworks industry are particularly busy. Ryder provides rental and maintenance services to nearly 50 fireworks companies, with more than 1,000 rental vehicles utilized for this industry alone.
One such company is Pyro Shows, which, with Ryder’s help, hosts community display shows all over the country in almost every state. On the Fourth of July alone, Pyro Shows conducts nearly 400 shows, which means they need hundreds of vehicles at a time. This makes rental the only viable solution since they require the flexibility of increasing or decreasing their fleet size depending on seasonal needs, and since owning and maintaining such a large number of vehicles can be extremely costly.
When I recently spoke with the fireworks company’s vice president, Michael Walden, he said they couldn’t do it without Ryder — “it would be logistically impossible.” Our extensive network allows customers like Pyro Shows to have access to vehicles at all times, which is especially crucial in the event that a vehicle has an issue of any sort requiring of immediate attention. Mr. Walden shared, “In this business, there is no second shot.” And this is quite often the case with most of our customers, who greatly rely on our on-the-fly service to ensure that they’re always ready for show time.
For more than eight years, Ryder has been a member of the American Pyrotechnics Association (APA), the voice of the fireworks industry promoting safety in the design and use of all types of legal fireworks. As a supplier member, Ryder has been active in association activities, with Ryder representatives regularly attending APA meetings, participating in Round Table sessions, and exhibiting in the APA’s Resource Room. We lend both financial support to the industry through dues and sponsorship support, and also through time and expertise. Ryder places great importance on championing safety, which is one of the main reasons why we support the APA, but most importantly, we know the support means a great deal to our customers in the industry.
