The Green Road Ahead

February 16, 2010

The disappointing outcome of December’s global climate change conference in Copenhagen was probably inevitable given the myriad issues on the table-a big table that included leaders from around the world. China’s posturing and unilateral stance certainly didn’t help. It’s time for the country to decide which side of the fence it wants to be on-a major world superpower and manufacturing giant that has to live by the rules, or a developing country that shouldn’t be expected to ‘clean up its act’ just yet. After all the anticipation, the conference ended without a treaty and with no internal or external enforcement mechanisms. Maybe the goals were a little too ambitious, maybe not.

But, the good news is that the momentum towards sustainability hasn’t slowed down in the private sector, in fact it’s only gaining steam.

In March, WT100 is launching a new column devoted to green technology. The column will be a companion to our existing Green Matters column, which highlights various news related to sustainability in the supply chain. The new green technology column will cover developments such as networked vehicles and smart warehouses, vehicle-to-roadside wireless communication, and satellite tracking of containers.

Technology is the juice for the sustainable supply chain, and it’s moving fast. We’re excited to launch this new editorial product and we’re sure you’ll enjoy the read.

And speaking of technology, we’re also going to start mobile tagging this month to give you the rich content found in all of our products-the monthly magazine, Web site, and various e-newsletters.

So join us on the Green Road, there’s plenty to discover ahead.

gov't work together...

Let's face it, it's a 'global' economy that requires similar coordination and participation whether we're talking about economies (U.S., Europe, and Asia working together during the recession to stabilize the banking sector), trade legislation (100 percent cargo screening that requires cooperations between countries around the world), et cetera. In other words, like it or not, all the world leaders need to work together on this issue. And, the U.S. EPA's SmartWay program is a good example of a government- led program that works for sustainability.

Why ERP software won't work for the global supply chain

For the past 30 years companies have tried and failed to apply their ERP software to automate their supply chains. ERP was designed to work within a single company, not across companies. New cloud platforms apply a radically different information model to the supply chain and put entire value chains on the same information page.
