Renewal of the trade agreement was considered unlikely. Ecuador terminated its participation in the Andean Trade Preference Act with the U.S. on Thursday after the U.S. threatened to revoke special trade benefits given Ecuador. The agreement was set to expire next month and was not expected to be renewed – particularly if Ecuador granted asylum to Edward Snowden, who leaked sensitive information about National Security Agency activities to the British newspaper, The Guardian.
